Live Music — Friday and Saturday nights

Friday, March 11th, The Baja Boogie Blues and Bluegrass Band will play at Miguel’s Restaurant II at Los Cerritos. Don’t miss this smokin’ hot musical event featuring Shawn O’Neill on fiddle and special guest singers and guitar pickers from way up north. Miguel is coming up with a special dinner menu for the evening. So, bring your dancing shoes and your appetite. Special opening performance of original songs and storytelling by Greg Kitchel. It all get’s started at 6 pm.

Saturday, March 12th, The Baja Boogie Blues and Bluegrass Band will be heating up the dance floor at the Hotel California. There’s lots of room to get up and dance! Greg Kitchel will open the show at 8 pm.

Tuesdays in La Paz

Tuesdays are the day to be in La Paz.
The new Farmer’s Market in the historic district keeps growing with tables lining Madero for the block from Caprichos to Sabores de México (5 de Mayo to Constitución). You’ll find BasilFields’ organic produce and Marcela with her family’s ranch cheeses. You can buy coffee, shrimp empanadas, individual quiches, scones, sushi, bread, homemade marmalade and more.
After a stroll on the malecón, stop in to Se Habla La Paz language school for a free cultural presentation in easy Spanish. March topics are: 8th-Important Dates for Mexicans, 15th-Benito Juarez, his life and legacy, 22nd-The Peso, explanation of the markings on the bills and coins, 29th-The State of Chihuahua.
Then start your evening at La Encantada galeria, cava and deli. The wine bar and deli is located in the lovely courtyard behind the gallery. Lila and Max serve a selection of cheese and imported meat trays with crusty bread, paired with a glass or bottle of wine.

New Calendarios and the Festival de Cine

The newest issue of “El Calendario” is on the streets featuring the art of Jill Logan. Look inside for stories on Carnaval La Paz, local Farmer’s Markets, Mexico coffee, the history of Mexican marionettes, the Artist’s Studio Tour, the House and Garden Tour and more.

The big story this week is the 8th Annual Festival de Cine. The Festival opens in La Paz with films shown March 1, 2 and 3 at the Teatro de la Cuidad. Stop into La Encantada galeria / cava / deli afterward for a glass of wine and lovely cheese and imported meat pairing.

The Festival opens March 4th in Todos Santos with special guest Diego Luna. Films will be shown March 4, 5, 6, and 7 at the Teatro Marquez de Leon on th plaza. Every night of the festival there will be food, drinks and music in the plaza to enjoy before or after the feature presentation.

Festival de Cine de Todos Santos

International Film Star Diego Luna presents the Eighth Festival de Cine de Todos Santos: 100 reserve tickets are available for the Festival’s 2011 edition, which showcases the finest Latino cinema. This year, the Festival will screen 13 films with special emphasis on Mexican and Cuban cinema. Films will be shown in La Paz on March 1, 2, and 3 at the Teatro de la Ciudad. The Festival de Cine takes place March 4, 5, 6 and 7, in Todos Santos at the Teatro Manuel Marquez de León. Friday, March 4, Diego Luna will open the Festival in Todos Santos with a special showing of his new film “Abel,” his directorial debut. Suggested donations for the Opening Night film are 100 pesos; 50 pesos for all other films. Tickets are available at El Tecolote Bookstore in Todos Santos and at the Teatro de la Ciudad in La Paz. All films in Spanish with English subtitles.

The last weekend in February

Wondering what to do while waiting for the next issue of El Calendario?

El Calendario’s artist of the month for December/January, Jennifer Power and partner Daphna Jindrich’s new gallery “Alas y Olas” is having their grand opening Saturday, February 26 at 6 p.m. They are located on calle Hidalgo in the Todos Santos historic district, next to La Bodega and the Gemini Deli. During the opening, La Bodega will be selling fine wines by the glass and hors d’oeuvres will be provided by the Gemini Deli. They invite everyone to come to the party!

Sunday, February 27, the Palapa Society of Todos Santos’ 17th Annual Historic Home Tour will provide residents and visitors with their once-a-year opportunity to see the beautiful homes inside the walls of several historic district buildings. A day to remember former sugar cane and ranching wealth in Todos Santos, the special historical area experience will be enriched by tour guides, building docents and guide maps. The price is $200 pesos with the option to self-explore or to take one of the tours with guides who know the fascinating history, local lore and legends. Registration is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the Centro Cultural. The homes are open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A special tour event will be the display and sale of paintings by several Todos Santos and La Paz artists who are represented by the Galería de Todos Santos. One of the works is featured on this year’s Historic Home tour poster, and many paintings will reflect the Todos Santos area. This is a rare opportunity to purchase original pieces of art by many different painters and sculptors. All proceeds will benefit the various programs at the Palapa Center as well as the local Bomberos (firemen).

Art and Love

There’s more happening this weekend than just the Todos Santos Festival del Arte.

Saturday, February 12 galeria indigo in Todos Santos will host a cocktail reception for artist Ezra Katz. Come meet the artist and see his new works.

Sunday, February 13 is the annual FurBall at the Hotel California. Enjoy appetizers, drinks, Chef Dany’s delicious dinner, raffle, auction, music and dancing. Thanks to your support, we were able to spay and neuter more than 300 animals last year.

And for those enamorados
Saturday, February 12 and Monday, February 14, La Encantada in the historic district of La Paz, is having a special candle light Valentine’s dinner for two in their beautiful garden setting. Caprese salad, imported prosciutto and melon, lasagna and tiramisu.

If you’re spending Valentine’s Day in Todos Santos, enjoy a romantic evening with a prix fix menu and music at Ristorante Tre Galline. Caesar salad with organic chicken, tagliolini with zucchini and truffle oil, baked sea bass Mediterranean style or sirloin with Parmesan and arugula, and puffed pastry with custard. 400 pesos without beverage. Live Italian acoustic guitar and percussion music by Alberto, Roberto and Beppe.

Todos Santos Festival del Arte

A Mecca for artists, writers, painters, dancers, sculptors and musicians, Todos Santos will be buzzing with extra music and drama during the town’s Annual Arts Festival, February 12 through 19. All activities are free.

It’s a family-friendly opportunity to sample local foods, browse for locally made arts and crafts or view colorful displays of orchids. Or, you can hang out with Bohemian Baja California writers and discuss their latest novels.

During the first two days of the Festival, there will be art exhibits in the Plaza. The open air market of arts and crafts will be open daily in the lot beside the Hotel California. Every day, at 4 p.m., there are workshops for kids in dance, literature, painting and music. Wrap up the day with a no-cost concert or theater production.

The action takes place in downtown Todos Santos near the plaza. To avoid traffic jams park a few blocks away and walk to the festivities.

Daytime celebrations start at 10 a.m. and run through 6 p.m.

Cinco de Febrero

There’s a lot going on Saturday, February 5th in Todos Santos…

Start your day (and month) off with the 3rd Annual Todos Santos 5k Run/Walk. The race starts and finishes at the Plaza Marquez de Leon and works it way through town. Pre-race warm ups take place in the plaza at 8:30 a.m. You can register the morning of the race, or Thursday, February 3 and Friday, February 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cafelix. The 5k is $150 pesos. The 1k is only 10 pesos. This race is a benefit for the Palapa Society’s Chino Project for children with major medical needs.

After a good breakfast at one of the fine restaurants in town, it’s time to get cleaned up for some art and jazz.

Galeria Logan is having an art opening from 2 to 6 p.m. featuring works by guest artist, Donna Mattson, and new work by Jill Logan. Live music will be provided by the Todd Clouser Jazz Band. All art will be displayed through February 19.

The night before the big race or the night after the big race, you can catch a little theater under the stars with “The Wizard of Oz with a Todos Twist” by Blue Moon productions. The show starts at 7:30 pm and tickets are available at El Tecolote Bookstore; La Bodega de Todos Santos, or at the door. Dress warmly!
